People have asked this question for over 2000 years. Many people hold various opinions about who this man was. But what does the Bible say? The Bible tells us that Jesus was more than a historical figure or religious revolutionary. He was the true God. He was also a real man. Jesus Christ died for the sins of all mankind, yet He rose from death and still lives today. He is the Savior. He is God with us. And He is waiting for you to open your heart to Him.
Who does Jesus say that He is?
I AM
- Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM!” (John 8:58)
- In this statement Jesus claims equality with God, confirming that He is not a created being, but has always existed.
Son of Man
- So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I am he.” (John 8:28)
- Indicating He is fully human, Jesus predicts His death through crucifixion and His role as the true Messiah. The Son of Man is raised from the dead, sits at the right hand of God the Father and rules an eternal kingdom of all peoples and nations (Psalm 80:17; Daniel 7:13-14).
Saviour
- Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
- Jesus says He is the one and only way of salvation, our only Mediator to access God the Father. It is not by what we do (our works), but by what Jesus has done that we are accepted by God. In addition, He claims to be truth itself and the author and giver of life.
The One with All Authority
- Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (Matthew 28:18)
- In this declaration, Jesus tells the disciples that He is both Lord and Christ, with His kingdom extending to heaven and earth. The authority for this kingdom was given to Him because He overcame sin, death and evil and is thus worthy of all authority on heaven and earth.
Why is this important?
- Since Jesus was fully God and fully human, but without sin, He had the power to overcome sin and be a substitute for all mankind as the final sacrifice for sin, defeating the power of evil.
How can we trust this is true?
- Biblical writings were published within the lifetime of eyewitnesses to Jesus’ life; therefore, they were subject to verification or correction.
- There is a vast number of consistent copies of early Biblical manuscripts distributed in a wide geographical area, which confirms consistency with original manuscripts.
